After a long night of tracing her tattoos with my damp forefinger,

and while the wind through an ajar window made her toes curl

around a secondhand blanket,

and as a cat scurried off to find something else to be bitter towards,

and the noises of the city usher in like a ghost with unfinished business,

enveloping our bodies and carrying us as if

reclined in an old rusty suitcase,

free from the common laws of the land we hide away

in the darkness of a corner,

where no one taps on doors and disturbs the dust

that circles around the floorboards,

where we sleep with the moon that no one sees

and a glow reserved only for us and fits you just right,

we lay in the glove of the night,

surrendering to the hold of dusk.

Courthouses. Legs.

The two cannot be separated once they’ve been experienced together. I hit the elevator floor button as if it were a fast trigger, but before the door shuts, a flood of flesh enters. Cornered by the scents of lotioned down body parts. What is the attraction to law? Have these leggy people been scorned? Have they come to seek justice and not found it, so instead immersed themselves in it? Hoping one day they can be the lawyer of their attacker? Put the high heel into his ass as they’ve always dreamed? The smiles they give. They aren’t the ones of Santa Monica. There’s a fierceness. Painful glints that shimmer in their lips. Around their mouths there is a pull that is forced, but all the while judicially seductive. Oh, the business casual, the formalities, the over, underdressed. Those black dresses that hug in every right way. They are the women you’d take home and then they’d leave. In the dim of the morning you’d hear their heels crack together; the door confidently slamming. Yes. The legs in the courthouse. The necklines of a woman going someplace. Her nose to the ceiling, headed off into the sunlight with an impervious chip on her tanned, exposed shoulder.

Sucking it in, gathering it and harvesting it

Wrapping around the universe

I’d drain every star, galaxy, nebula,

Sinking my teeth in and letting it drip out

Into tentacles, veins of golden luminance

Every lamp, lantern, streetlight

Lightening bolt, lightening bug, lightbulb

Projection lamp, light emitting diode,

Concentrated beams and beacons

Warming me as they enter me

Illuminating my mouth, esophagus

Until my stomach erupts

I’d become the sun

Something larger than my body can hold

I’d lift, weightless

Exploding in the atmosphere

Ever searching an importance in the light
